Weirdest Ritual

An experimental animated music video.
3/5

Review

Directed and animated by Inger Bierma, ‘Weirdest Ritual’ is an animated music video for the artist Leoni Leoni – based on her titled song. The film follows an experimental narrative that explores themes of love, sexuality and intimacy. A dreamlike sequence of sensuality and yearning, the short challenges viewer interpretation. Constructed of vibrant colors, the video follows a non-linear narrative throughout.

The 3-minute film opens with a secluded hill-top house. Inside, we are introduced to an isolated figure who is crippled with melancholy and longing for desire. The television plays a sequence of sensual kissing that overcomes our protagonists’ emotions. An amalgamation of creative imagery aids the themes, albeit puzzling to watch. Leoni Leoni’s tones are heard throughout.

Inger Bierma has taken a bold creative risk with this animation – and for that she should be applauded. The video highlights her skillful craft and outlandish imagination. A mainstream audience may find the film mystifying, which is possibly Bierma’s intention. ‘Weirdest Ritual’ deserves appreciation for its complexity and unique artistry. The sense of loneliness, isolation and desire for affection appears to be the core storyline – but that could easily be debated. An intriguing video from start to finish. Highly recommended for fans of experimental narratives.
