It’s A Love/Hate Thing

A comical breakup story.
4/5

Review

Krishna Kolanupaka’s short dramedy ‘It’s A Love/Hate Thing’ takes a comedic look at the breakup of Mike (Dawson Wigle) and Jesse (Natalia Aranguren). Mike, out-of-the-blue and with a quality of cold narcissism, calls time on the relationship – much to his girlfriend’s surprise and confusion. We follow their journey through heartbreak, indecision and acceptance with humorous absurdity.

Paul Urrutia’s script is undeniably witty, sad, heart-warming and hopeful. It doesn’t shy away from highlighting the real psychological chaos a dumper and the dumpee experience – fear, shock, begging, desperation and indecisiveness. The film also handles hard-hitting themes such as abuse and mental health – albeit craftly intertwined with farcical moments. Dawson Wigle’s performance as Mike is mesmerising – built up by the unpredictability of his character. Natalia Aranguren, who plays Jesse, brings a relatable girl-next-door innocent quality and, in comedic terms, acts as Wigle’s comedic sidekick.

It’s A Love/Hate Thing’ incorporates several hilarious moments of comic relief, notably the unforeseen appearance of Mike’s evil maybe crazy sister (who bears witness to the break-up) and a crew member – whom she shrugs off during a tense scene. Krishna delivers a smart comedic short that is not only enriched with absurdity, but equally balanced with tender moments.
