Review

Written and directed by Ted Therkildsen, ‘What Are We Trying To Do Here?’ is a coming-of-age drama film that explores the taxing home and work life of a young man. Emmett Kineman leads the cast as Evan, a teenager who feels like his life is at a dead end. Sean Church co-stars as his formidable manager. A poignant short that will resonate with many.

The 11-minute film opens with a restless Evan struggling to sleep – sparked by oppression from his parents and employer. Overwhelmed by pressure to move out of the family home, Evan saves up for a rental deposit with his girlfriend, but his job at a clothing boutique comes with a thankless manager that demands more than he can mentally take. Evan feels stuck between a rock and a hard place – a narrative that most viewers will have encountered.

Emmett Kineman (Evan) delivers a convincing performance throughout. His ability to showcase the characters dilemma, with little dialogue, is beyond impressive. A promising young actor to keep an eye on. Ted Therkildsen (Writer/Director) has created a moving narrative that will likely strike a chord with its audience. Cinematography is of a professional quality, accompanied with high-grade sound and editing. A captivating watch. Highly recommended.
