Wrecked

Synopsis

Matt attends group therapy to open up about being raped.

Review

5/5
A captivating fictional story of a male rape victim.
A powerful short film that delves into a fictional tale of a male rape victim. This 10-minute film, Written & Directed by Stewart Hannah, opens with an anxious breath of our sole character, Matt (Aaron Clelland), as he begins to tell us his captivating story.

Wrecked, which is almost entirely shot in one intimate continuous take, is set within a group therapy session. As we learn about Matt (25) and his regular life “just outside Glasgow”, it becomes increasingly apparent he has something to get off his chest. The short shy’s away from dramatic visual storytelling, which enables the audience to imagine the events as the character describes –amplified by facial expressions, body language and tone. It shouldn’t work, but it does, effortlessly.

Wrecked Short Film by Stewart Hannah
A stunning performance by Aaron Clelland, who delivers 8 or so minutes of dialogue without any noticeable oversights. Moving, deliberately thought-provoking, that leaves you feeling convinced, if not confused, that you are watching an interview of a real-life victim of sexual abuse. The film is strengthened by gentle cinematography, compelling fades, dignified writing and breath-taking acting – literally.

Stewart Hannah directs a truly stunning short that will strike a chord with many survivors, particularly the unheard voices of male sexual abuse. The concept is fairly simple, when it comes to a short film narrative, but that doesn’t make it easy to pull off. Stewart, together with Aaron, have created something truly compelling and brave.
