Written and directed by Rob Styles, ‘A Social (Media) Construct’ is an experimental drama film that explores the inner conflict of an aspiring content creator. Catarina Sousa stars as Ameena, a young YouTuber who battles with both self-doubt and tenacity after a recording. Set entirely within one location, the film explores themes of identity, body image, mental health and creativity.

The 3-minute film opens with Ameena self-taping an episode for her YouTube channel. Upon completion, we are introduced to her clashing thoughts in the form of her psychical self. The “angel” and the “devil” battle against each other as Ameena plays back the recording. A captivating watch from start to finish.

Rob Styles has created an extraordinary film that highlights an important topic in the age of technology and social media. The film picks up on the unsettling act of self-loathing – largely fueled by the rise of social media platforms. Viewers may relate to the internal dogfight that occurs in everyday life and the constant need for self-assurance. Catarina Sousa delivers a profound performance that deserves high praise and attention. Cinematography is of a highly professional standard with fine sound and editing. A captivating watch.
