Review

Written and directed by Nace DeSanders, ‘The Wounded and The Watcher’ is a short experimental mystery film that explores societies fascination with observing trauma. Gwen Grace leads the cast as a brutally wounded woman on the cusp of fatality. The film showcases themes of death, suffering, enchantment and insensitivity.

The 6-minute film opens with a lacerated women clutching her bloody wound on her apartment floor. Audiences will be startled by the anguish from start to finish. As the film continues, a helpless woman watches over her suffering for self-serving entertainment. The agony is later watched by the general public, who take videos, selfies and photos of the unfolding trauma.

Gwen Grace delivers a remarkable performance as the victim. Her level of authenticity is chilling to watch. The mysterious narrative is likely to perplex the audience, which is possibly DeSanders intention. Despite being heavily experimental, the short is highly captivating throughout. The mystery is certain to cause intrigue. Visually, the film is beautifully shot with high quality cinematography and lighting. Editing, music and sound are equally commendable. Nace DeSanders deserves high praise for her artistic creation. ‘The Wounded and The Watcher’ is a peculiar, albeit disturbing watch. Highly recommended.
