The Nobody Prayer

A poignant drama that explores homosexuality and Christianity.
3/5

Review

Written and directed by Shaun T. Pulsifer, ‘The Nobody Prayer’ is a short drama film that explores a young man’s personal conflict with his faith and sexuality. Inspired by Pulsifer’s own voyage of acceptance, the film explores themes of religion, homosexuality, identity and anxiety. Rylan Nilsson leads the cast as the troubled soul. A poignant narrative that doesn’t shy away from cross-examining Christianity.

The 7-minute film opens with an awe-inspiring aerial shot of the young man. His despair ripens as he sits on a bench interrogating the presence of God. Despite being a devout Christian since birth, the man is left muddled about his sexual orientation and seeks an affirmation from God. Bereft from members of a Christian community has triggered his isolated existence and self-deprecation. When the voice of God rewards him with unconditional love, the man begins to rebuild his tenacity and accept his homosexuality.

Shaun T. Pulsifer has created a moving drama that delves, with sensitivity, into the exclusion of homosexuals within Christianity. Pulsifer’s narrative will bring comfort and self-worth to many by breaking down the fallacious ideology of God’s judgement. Rylan Nilsson delivers a remarkable performance throughout. His portrayal will inspire, encourage and bring self-acceptance to those in similar ordeals. Visually, cinematography is of a professional standard that will maintain viewer engagement. Sound, editing and lighting are equally praiseworthy. Pulsifer deserves high acclaim for shining a light on an intricate subject matter. Highly recommended.
