Control

A horror that explores a married couple and their manipulative lovers.
4/5

Review

Written and directed by Patrick Green, ‘Control’ is a short horror film that explores infidelity in a relationship. The film follows John (Brad Jenkins) and Elizabeth (Kaylin Zeren), a married couple who are manipulated by their lovers to kill each other. Additional cast include; Ann Marie Soltis as Jessica – John’s mistress, and Layal Syriani as Ramona – Elizabeth’s lesbian lover. The film showcases themes of coercion, betrayal and psychological abuse.

The 14-minute horror opens with a hesitant John glaring in the bathroom mirror. His eyes briefly appear unhuman. Jessica, John’s tenacious mistress, interrupts his moment of doubt to ensure he goes along with the killing of his wife. Despite John’s uncertainty, his love for Jessica is real – albeit in fear and belittlement. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is forced into the same action by her own lover, Ramona, who encourages Elizabeth to murder her husband. The film concludes with a shocking twist that reveals a horrific conspiracy.

Patrick Green has created an intense horror that will grip the audience from start-to-finish. The narrative is cunningly-clever – just like the antagonists. Acting delivery all round is astonishing. High praise to the entire cast. Visually, cinematography is of a professional standard that is accompanied by outstanding lighting and production design. Editing, sound and music are equally commendable. ‘Control’ is a chilling short film that deserves appreciation. A thrilling, albeit terrifying watch. Highly recommended.
