Cockroaches & Cologne

A witty musical comedy about a one-night-stand.
5/5

Review

Directed by Tyler Milliron, based on the book by Jennifer R. Manocherian, ‘Cockroaches & Cologne’ is a short musical comedy that follows a one-night-stand. With music by Dan Martin, and lyrics by Michael Biello, the film stars Trey Compton (Ben) and his real-life wife, Lara Hayhurst (Remy). The short utilizes green-screen technology throughout. Audiences will be treated to a whole load of belly-laughs and snappy musicality. A charming watch.

The 14-minute musical opens with a passionate Ben and Remy retreating to a hotel room. The sexual energy is cut short after Remy sees cockroaches beside the bed. In an effort to bring back excitement, Ben kills the cockroaches and sprays some cologne on his body – unfortunately, Remy is allergic to the cologne. The narrative, told through song and dance, is about two strangers who unravel themselves to each other, subsequently falling in love. Delightful and highly entertaining.

Trey Compton and Lara Hayhurst deliver exceptional performances from the get-go. Their vocal ability, coupled with comedy timing is flawless – a match made in musical-comedy heaven. The lyrics are witty and sharp, rewarding the audience with many laugh-out-loud moments. Musical composition is equally praiseworthy. Visual effects are of an acceptable standard throughout. Sound is of the highest quality. Tyler Milliron has created a fabulous short that will go down a treat with musical theatre lovers. Highly recommended.
