Review

Written and directed by SA Brown, ‘Telling Stories’ is a short comedy drama film that delves into a screenwriters psychology amidst her battle with inspiration and creativity. Laura Poindexter leads the cast as the struggling writer, with Spenser Brown, David Buchanan, Thelma R. Mitchell and Elyse Davis as her fictional characters. A witty short that will captivate viewers from the get-go.

The 16-minute drama opens with the frustrated writer lost for words in her office. A period of writer’s block overcomes her. With a deadline of 48 hours from the film studio, she begins to create characters in her head. The four characters attempt to assist her with the storyline and characterization, leading to conflict and creative indifference. The short showcases visual realization of possible scenes, intercut with the writing process.

SA Brown has created an interesting concept for a short film. The strong narrative will certainly engage viewers throughout, with solid performances from the entire cast. Despite having a low production value, the film is well put-together with commendable cinematography, sound and editing. Laura Poindexter’s portrayal as the vexed writer deserves high praise. SA Brown (Writer/Director) has touched on a relatable subject matter with a comical twist. Highly Recommended.
