A musical drama about the renowned ballerina/actress Moira Shearer.
4/5

Review

Written and directed by Steve Exeter, ‘Òran na h-Eala’ is a short musical drama that explores the casting of Moira Shearer (a renowned Scottish ballet-dancer and actress) for the 1948 classic film ‘The Red Shoes’. Shannon Davidson portrays the role of Shearer, with Alastair Thomson Mills and Alec Westwood starring as producers Michael Powel and Emeric Pressburger. Nicole Nelrose makes an appearance as the English ballerina Margot Fonteyn. The narrative follows Shearer’s initial reluctance to move from ballet to cinema. Based on a true story, the film explores themes of female empowerment and contention.

The 13-minute film opens with Shearer watching the esteemed ballerina Margot Fonteyn perform, albeit begrudgingly. Her lack of elevation, due to Fonteyn’s success, causes inner conflict. When producers offer a lucrative role in a ballet-themed movie, she rejects outright – instead wishing to focus on her craft. The film explores her haunting decision and her subsequent change of heart.

Steve Exeter has created a fascinating drama that rewards viewers with an intriguing insight into the career transition of Shearer. Shannon Davidson (Shearer) delivers a faultless performance throughout and enriches the audience with her theatrical vocals. High quality cinematography and production/costume design sets the period and tone of the film perfectly. High praise to Nicole Nelrose (Choreographer/Fonteyn), A charming watch. Highly recommended.

A vivid dream exploration of Moira Shearer’s heart and mind, just before and after she agreed to star in Powell and Pressburger’s beloved cinema classic “The Red Shoes”, a decision that would change her life forever.
