5/5

Review

Directed and produced by Rufus Wilson, ‘Escape’ is a short documentary film about a classically trained artist, and his relocation to the Isle of Mull for serenity and inspiration. The docu-short follows Alastair Brown, a full-time landscape oil painter, and explores his passion for nature and Earthly scenery.

The 5-minute film opens with Brown scouting the coastal trails of the island, in search for the perfect location. His observations and artistic background are revealed through his own voice-over narration. We learn of Brown’s training at the London Atelier of Representational Art (LARA) and his appreciation for landscape artistry, due to the ever changing light and environmental connection. The film predominantly showcases Brown composing a painting on the beach. The overall message of the documentary is to highlight the importance of realistic art, which is under threat by fast/commercial art.

Rufus Wilson (Director/DOP) has produced a stunning short film, with breath-taking cinematography from start to finish. Viewers will be captivated by Brown’s ingenuity and perhaps be inspired to explore nature or pick-up a paint brush. The landscapes of the Isle of Mull are certain to entice viewers to the area. Andrew Brown is a real talent and deserves high praise for his artistry and technique. Rufus Wilson should be equally commended. A gorgeous film.
