Meet My Family

Synopsis

Cultures clash when a young Nigerian-American man brings home his African-American girlfriend to meet his traditional Nigerian family.

Review

3/5
A farcical comedy that explores a clash of ethnic cultures.
Written and directed by Oyebola O Ande, ‘Meet My Family’ is a short comedy film that explores the clash of ethnic cultures when a young man introduces his girlfriend to his parents. Toni Brion stars as Rachel, the African-American girlfriend of Chief – a Nigerian-American portrayed by Xavier Keitt. The satire explores themes of family, relationships and stereotypes.

The 11-minute comedy opens with awe-inspiring drone footage of suburban Charlotte, North Carolina. We are introduced to Chief as he wakes up his reluctant partner. Chief’s Nigerian parents are expecting them for an introductory family dinner, sparking Rachel’s anxiety and trepidation. Meanwhile, at Chief’s family home, Mr and Mrs Bade catch wind of Rachel’s African-American roots, showcasing paramount religious practice and stereotypical behavior – albeit with a comical undertone. In fear that Rachel inhabits an aggressive trait, the family retaliate upon their arrival when Chief shows up wearing an eye-patch. A farcical comedy from start to finish.

Oyebola O Ande has created a hilarious narrative that will strike a chord with interracial couples. The entire cast deliver robust performances that promises a ton of belly laughs. Visually, cinematography is of an acceptable standard that will keep viewers engaged. Editing, sound and music of equal measure. The film doesn’t take itself too seriously and embraces the close-to-the-bone storyline. An amusing watch throughout.
