Later Gator

Synopsis

Baird, a sardonic, reticent Kmart employee, and Noah, a gregarious, virtuous wunderkind, have been best friends since childhood. Their relationship is challenged during a fateful day at the ocean when Baird almost drowns. Noah heroically saves his life, but instead of being thankful, Baird develops a dangerous resentment toward his friend when he retells the story to his attractive, new girlfriend, Isla, culminating in his drunken attack on Noah.

Review

5/5
A poignant drama that explores a shattered friendship.
Written and directed by Kevin Quinn, ‘Later Gator’ is a short drama film that unravels hostility and indifference within a life-long friendship. Starring Robert Ottaviano (Baird) and Cameron Burton (Noah), the narrative delves into the by-product of Noah’s life-saving heroism – after rescuing Baird from a rip current when their kayak overturned. Dana DePirri co-stars as Noah’s new girlfriend. The short explores the drawback of a friendship where personalities clash – leading to inevitable acrimony. In spite of the film’s somber subject matter, a comical underbelly waves throughout. A tale about platonic love gone awry.

The 20-minute tale opens with Baird’s near-fatal drowning in the ocean – a stellar, albeit dramatic opening that sets up the ball-game nicely. Months later, during a house-party, Noah recounts his heroic act to his new girlfriend – which results in an unforeseen enragement from Baird. Ill-will continues, before Noah – with a heavy heart – confronts his friend about the growing resentment.

Based on his personal experience, Kevin Quinn (Writer/Director) has crafted an intriguing narrative that is scarcely explored. The “break-up” of a friendship is undoubtedly an emotional experience – which Cameron Burton flawlessly illustrates in his performance. Robert Ottaviano’s cold and reserved portrayal is equally well conveyed – a reaction that many viewers will have endured. Technically, the short is professionally constructed with blazing cinematography, sound and post-production. A worthy watch. Highly recommended.
