Review

Written and directed by Bódi Tibor Zoltán, ‘The Professional’ is a short action film that delves into the criminal underworld. Csaba Jakab leads the cast as the kingpin of a crime mob, with Ács Bernadett Bettina and Nyutali Norbert as two sultry associates who undertake his dirty work. Produced in the Hungarian language, with English subtitles throughout, the short explores themes of betrayal and female empowerment. With awe-inspiring cinematography and production design, ‘The Professional’ is certain to rivet and engross the audience.

The 9-minute film opens in suspense as the crime boss waits for a delivery by the sultry couple. Introduced for the first time, the boss overlooks the supremacy of the woman – disregarding her competence in favour of her male accomplice. Vengeful turmoil erupts when the boss betrays their trust – which leads to an explosive unveiling of female empowerment.

Bódi Tibor Zoltán has created a gritty tale of treachery that makes for action-packed viewing. Szirák Tamás’s adept cinematography secures the film’s success – accompanied by fitting post-production, sound and special effects. Acting delivery is well orchestrated with a stand-out portrayal by Ács Bernadett Bettina – a steely performance that warrants high acclaim. The entire short could easily be misinterpreted as an introductory scene to a feature length production – which pays homage to the astonishing craftsmanship. Highly recommended.
