Directed by Mark Anthony Thomas, Shane McFarland and Jordon Rooney, ‘Folded Whispers’ is a short performative documentary that exhibits the poetry of Mark Anthony Thomas. Throughout the 25-minute intimate oration, which is recorded in front of a selected audience at the Pittsburgh’s Kelly Strayhorn Theatre in East Liberty, Mark delivers 17 compelling original poems that explore themes of identity, urbanism, love, loss and race. His adept eloquence, charm and undisputed wordsmanship is certain to mesmerize and intrigue.

Mark’s sermon-style delivery is bound to absorb and entice the viewer, as evident with the transfixed seated audience. Aside from the poet’s linguistic excellence, the film pays homage to the Kelly Strayhorn Theatre itself – a venue that celebrates the work of emerging talent and progressivism. The poet, who was born and raised in Atlanta – now living in Baltimore, observes society, his personal woes and his pathway from childhood. This review is careful not to divulge too much of Mark’s poetic verses – as a charming element of this film is the unforeseen context, the poet’s conveyance and his craftsmanship.

Technically, the production is modestly constructed in an effort to grasp the poet’s every word. A gentle musical soundtrack is utilized to aid the verbal medium. Sound and post-production is equally commendable. The audience will find ‘Folded Whispers’ deeply spiritual, reflective and sporadically poignant. Highly recommended viewing.
