Directed by Marielle Heydt, Holly M. Kaplan and Mariana Empis, from a script by Kaplan, ‘The Lesson (Lecke)’ is a short drama that tells the story of two teenage girls and their quest to steal alcohol. The film stars Tereza Vejvodová as Simona, Estelle Roger as Marketa, and Eva Kozderkova as Jirina. A poignant film that explores themes of teenage rebellion, friendship, crime, compassion and dementia. The entire short is in the Czech language with English subtitles.

The 7-minute drama opens with best-friends Simona and Marketa attempting to steel alcohol from a local market. Simona’s lack of remorse and continued provocation catches Marketa by surprise. Their failed attempt results in Marketa revealing that her elderly piano teacher (Jirina) lives nearby – who was once an avid drinker. As the friends arrive at Jirina’s, they abuse her dementia condition to gain entry. Whilst Simona ravages through personal belongings, Marketa helps Jirina find her misplaced tea. As the film continues, Simona’s boorish behavior sparks distress in the old women. When Marketa leaves, Jirina’s forgetfulness leads a compassionate Simona to stay for a piano lesson.

Marielle Heydt, Holly M. Kaplan and Mariana Empis have created a moving short that will break the hearts of many viewers. A striking drama that doesn’t shy away from exploring abuse and teenage misdemeanor. Filmed in 16-mm, the short is beautiful captured with outstanding cinematography from start to finish. Editing, music and sound are equally commendable. High praise to Tereza Vejvodová and Estelle Roger – two fine young actresses with captivating performances. Eva Kozderkova delivers a remarkable portrayal as dementia-stricken Jirina, albeit a heart-wrenching watch. Highly recommended.
