86 Fear

1/5
An experimental reinterpretation of ‘A Christmas Carol’.

Synopsis

A townie’s drunken night out leads to eternal return, in this magical realist retelling of ‘A Christmas Carol’.

Review

Written and directed by Andrew Mazur, ’86 Fear’ is an experimental drama film loosely inspired by ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens. Mazur’s reinterpretation explores a more pragmatic narrative rather than the original tale of conversion. The short film stars Mike Degregoria, Samantha Mullen, Aaron Schmidt, Ryan Johnson and Jessica Jurkiewicz. The drama is set in a Wisconsin tavern.

The 7-minute film opens with a drunken bargoer socializing with fellow punters. His depressive state brings attention to a mysterious human-like force, with the intent of changing his ways. Unfortunately, the man has no desire to adapt his lifestyle and continues on his road of self-destruction and mental health. A narrative tragedy that doesn’t shy away from showcasing limited character development.

Narratively, the film delivers an interesting concept – one that many audiences will empathize with. Sadly, viewer engagement is at risk of being compromised by lousy sound recording, editing and cinematography. Despite being an experimental film, its stylistic approach is hard to grasp and appreciate. A low-budget film cheapened by neglectful technicalities. Having said that, acting delivery by most of the cast is praiseworthy – delivering convincing characterizations throughout. A difficult watch overall.
