Directed by Khadejah Miller, from a script by Miller and Lynda Spagur, ‘Back Where We Started From’ is a short romanced-themed drama that delves into the plight, and subsequent restitution, of a broken family. Taylor Arnette leads the cast as Sabrina, who for the past 11-years has been estranged from her mother – due to her parent’s bitter divorce. Additional cast include; Rachael Jane, Michael Deadman and Shelby Lynn Phelps. In spite of the narrative’s initial fluctuating tone, the overall ambience is generally uplifting, with an aim to convey the importance of second chances, forgiveness and family unity.
With a milestone graduation around the corner, Sabrina reaches out to her distant mother in order to reassemble their relationship. After her father discovers their reunion, a conflict arises which results in a startling revelation about her mother’s self-destructive past. Sabrina journeys through the challenges of clemency, and before long, finds herself in the role of matchmaker to her parent’s reunification.
Miller and Spagur have formed an endearing tale that will resonate with many viewers. Irrespective of the narrative’s soapy characteristics, the drama promises satisfying viewing – with credible acting portrayals throughout. Minor sound/editing blunders are slightly detectable – owing to the unfortunate consequence of exterior filming – but that overall technicality is commendable. Khadejah Miller warrants praise and appreciation for this pleasant production. A worthy watch.
