Lead/Follow

An innovate dance-based romance film that will both entertain and stir.
5/5

Review

Written and directed by Colby Day, ‘Lead/Follow’ is an innovative drama film that delves into the courtship of a seemingly self-assured couple. Starring Della Saba (She) and Sam Nelson Harris (He), the romance-based narrative explores themes of sexuality and mental health – which is partially conveyed through expressive dance. With sensational craftsmanship throughout, ‘Lead/Follow’ is an unmissable short that exposes the armor we wear whilst pursuing romantic relationships.

Throughout the 12-minute drama, the musical soundtrack (Luke Burba) unashamedly acts as the narrative heartbeat – delivering the tone flawlessly. Set entirely in a photographic/film studio, the film utilizes vibrant lighting and production design to aid the overall storytelling. Saba and Harris portray two assertive singletons who quickly fall in love. In spite of the drama’s captivating entertainment – with a comical underbelly – the film gently unravels the characters shrouded inner woes as their companionship progresses.

Colby Day has created an awe-inspiring masterpiece with cinematic-style cinematography by Arlene Muller. The narrative is beautifully constructed and is charmingly complimented by contemporary-based choreography. Della Saba and Sam Nelson Harris bring comical eccentricity to their roles that beyond any doubt help to seal the film’s fate. With the beforementioned strengths, and high-quality sound and post-production, viewers are certain to be enthralled until the closing credits. Highly recommended viewing.
