Here Be Monsters

A chilling thriller that delves into a fractured friendship.
4/5

Review

Written and directed by Alexander McKee, ‘Here Be Monsters’ is a short thriller film that delves into the growing animosity between two life-long friends. Starring Claire Adams as Luna and Samantha Labrecque as Olivia, the narrative explores their inhumane act of cannibalism which begins to segregate their companionship. The film digs deep into the psyche of anthropophagy which makes for intriguing, albeit chilling viewing.

Set on a terrace in an affluent American mansion, the 9-minute thriller opens with Olivia cooking meat on the barbeque. As she joins her best friend of 11 years, whom she has been distant from for several months, Luna’s hostility and bitterness begins to flourish. Olivia, who is on the cusp of flying-the-nest, begins to question their homicidal practices – which only fuel’s Luna’s vengeful tendencies. A hair-raising watch with a startling narrative climax.

Under Alexander McKee’s stellar direction, the narrative and cast performances are impeccably executed – constructing the ominous tone flawlessly. Ryan Pfening’s adept cinematography is equally commendable – a cinematic finish that deserves high acclaim. Post-production and sound are also delivered to a high standard. The core themes of betrayal, torn friendships and psychopathy will keep viewers on tenterhooks – the closing scene will certainly not disappoint. An unsettling watch – in a good way. Highly recommended.

Brief Synopsis

Luna and Olivia have been confidants for years, yet the time they spent apart has taken a toll that requires a price they never intended. Dark secrets and horrifying intentions come to light over the seemingly simplest of summer meals. Justice and vengeance are never far removed from each other as Luna embraces the macabre desire that makes her dangerously human.
