3/5

Review

Written and directed by Shun Powell Jr, ‘Lizard Boy’ is a sci-fi horror film that explores the relationships of three senior year students after their visit to a disturbing house. The primary cast include; Mi’kael Reaves stars as Mark, Tyrell Shane as Ty, and Kieusha Perry as Aja. The short showcase’s themes of friendship, betrayal and jealousy. A frightening watch, albeit with a slow start.

The 23-minute film opens at Riverside University High School. Mark, who has an avid interest in reptilian creatures, attempts to understand the mystery surrounding the Olive Street house. We are introduced to Ty, a distinguished student, and Aja, the student body president. Mark and Ty share a strong brotherhood, whilst Aja catches the attention of Ty’s heart. The next day, after a Halloween party at the Olive Street house, Aja vanishes after vomiting in the school bathroom. Mark and Ty attempt to solve the disturbing disappearance, which proves frightfully testing to their friendship. Without revealing the plot, the narrative shifts into science-fiction with a wicked conclusion.

Shun Powell Jr has created a chilling film that is certain to keep viewers engaged throughout. Despite praise-worthy acting delivery from the young cast, the quality of sound and editing drags down a professional finish. Thankfully the narrative is strong enough to captivate viewers and maintain enjoyment. Cinematography, fight-choreography, SFX make-up and lighting are to be commended. A fine short film.
