Written and directed by Daniel Kerr, ‘Norm’ is a short drama film that explores a man’s struggle with his weight. Daniel Kerr stars as Norm – the sole character. Norm, who lives an isolated existence after cutting ties with his one and only friend, decides to document his weight loss program. In addition to body image, the film delves deep into the psychology and mental health of the character. A low-budget short that will captivate and disturb the audience.
The 19-minute film opens with Norm observing his appearance in the mirror. He sets out to vlog his 5-week transformation, with the goal to be accepted into society and wear his best suit again. Norm talks about his best friend Maude, who allegedly cut him out of her life during his initial weight-gain. The film powerfully delves into the characters betrayal and insecurities, amid his uphill struggle with body confidence. The final act provides a dark twist – a disturbing, albeit emotional, watch.
High praise to Daniel Kerr, a startling performance throughout. ‘Norm’ is essentially a one-man-film, delivered with fine cinematography, editing and sound – all achieved by Kerr himself. The characters personal battles will resonate with many. A powerful drama from start to finish. Highly recommended.
