Erde (Earth)

An artistic experimental film about the human body and nature.
3/5

Review

Directed by Mantas Jockus, ‘Erde (Earth)’ is an experimental short film that artistically explores the human body and nature. ‘Litany of Divine Absence’ by Nicholas Lens and Nick Cave provides the musical soundtrack. A deeply probing film with outstanding cinematography throughout. Erde is the German word for Earth. Despite being a German production, the film is released in the English language.

The 1-minute micro-short opens with what appears to be a desert landscape. The seductive voice-over asks, “Where are you?” The granular landscape begins to motion and crack – revealing human skin below. Droplets of water aid the unfolding. The narrator continues; “Where are you? Become yourself… so I can see you.” The film showcases intimate close-ups of a female human body – particularly the skin and bone structure. She opens her eyes as the voice-over states, “I can see you”.

Mantas Jockus has delivered a captivating micro-short that viewers will find seductive and enchanting. Despite a limited narrative and unconventional plot, the use of symbolism with nature and the human body, will certainly compel viewers. A tranquil, peaceful film experience. Visually, the cinematography is of a spectacular standard. The sound effects and musical soundtrack aid the peaceful tone. A beautifully meaningful film. Highly recommended.
