Review

Directed by Raabia Hussain and filmed by William Horsefield, ‘Two Deaf Travellers’ is a short adventure documentary that, as the title suggests, follows two hearing-impaired friends on their travels to Italy, Greece and Cyprus. The docu-short, which stars Hussain and Horsefield, explores the challenges deaf people can experience outside of their home country.

The 10-minute documentary opens in London, where William and Raabia discuss the communication challenges they may encounter. Their first stop is Naples, Italy – where they embrace the local culture. They visit Fontanelle cemetery – educating the viewer on the local history dating back to 1656. A comical moment is when they discuss how to order a pizza in sign language. The documentary quickly transitions to Greece, where William challenges himself by ask the locals for directions. Next stop is Cyprus, where they visit the Edro III shipwreck, Chantara Waterfall and Akrotiri sand hills. The film concludes in observation about their journey together and their biggest challenges as deaf people.

Raabia Hussain and William Horsefield have created a well-put-together documentary that can be enjoyed by all. William and Raabia are simply charming and their friendship is endearing to watch. Cinematography is of an exception standard and is pleasing to the eye – particularly of the local landscapes and architecture. ‘Two Deaf Travellers’ is a highly recommended short that will inspire, educate and entertain.
