Directed by Cavi Borges, from a screenplay by Rodrigo Fonseca, ‘Whirlwind’ is a short drama film that delves into the self-satisfying adventure of an isolated sailor. The film stars Marcelo Brou as Heleno – the sole on-screen character – who relinquishes his personal life for the benefit of solitude amongst nature. Catarina Saibro co-stars (in voice-over) as Leila – Heleno’s neglected wife. ‘Whirlwind’ explores themes of heartbreak, self-discovery, nature and isolation, and is produced in the Portuguese language (with English subtitles throughout).
The 11-minute drama opens with Heleno floating in the coastal water off Brazil. Throughout the narrative we are introduced to his innermost thoughts via his letter to Leila. During his sailing adventure we learn of his new found devotion and appreciation for nature – predominantly the waters that surround him. The audience will be rewarded by his idyllic lifestyle of tranquility and seclusion. Midway through the narrative we are introduced to the voice of Leila (his wife) in response to his letter – where she speaks of her longing for his return. The drama concludes in repudiation that will certainly startle viewers. A poignant finish that embraces self-dependency.
Marcelo Brou delivers a noteworthy performance from the offset, despite no onscreen character interaction. His euphoric portrayal is highly commendable. The audience will profoundly empathize with Leila – a heart-breaking delivery by Cataina Saibro. The drama is constructed with spectacular cinematography throughout – especially the breath-taking drone footage. Sound and post-production is of industry standard that will guarantee engagement. Borgers (Director) and Fonsecu (Writer) have created a sensational short that will enthrall and provoke audiences. Highly recommended.
