Bloody River Chapter: The Legacy

An intense crime drama about loyalty.
4/5

Review

Written and Directed by Philippe Joly, ‘Bloody River Chapter: The Legacy’ is a short criminal drama film that tests the boundaries of loyalty. Filmed and set in Hong Kong, Anthony Roussel stars as Stephane, a man held captive by a criminal gang. Philippe Joly co-stars as the antagonist, Mr. Mallick with Bastien Guers as his Bodyguard. A tense drama from start to finish. The entire short is filmed in one location and set in real time.

The 5-minute film opens with intense bloody violence. Stephane, tied to a chair, is being interrogated about the whereabouts of Jimmy. Unwilling to disclose and destroy his loyalty to Jimmy, Stephane is given two choices by Mr. Mallick: say nothing and be killed or reveal Jimmy’s whereabouts and his family will survive – albeit in sacrifice. Anthony Roussel delivers a fine performance throughout – the weight of his characters decision is felt through the lens. Philippe Joly (Writer/Director) gives a chilling performance as Mr. Mallick – a truly captivating watch.

Visually, the film excels with outstanding cinematography, sound and editing. A gentle musical soundtrack, coupled with the outdoor ambience, aid the tone and drama. Philippe Joly and his cast/crew have created a interesting short that will certainly keep viewers engaged. ‘Bloody River Chapter: The Legacy’ is one webisode of many to come. Highly recommended.
