A tender and insightful portrait of love tested by memory loss.

Review

‘Memories of Us’ is a powerful Northern Irish short that explores early-onset Alzheimer’s through the lens of a young couple . Written and directed by Thomas McQuillan, the film is both emotionally resonant and technically accomplished, marked by strong performances and a high level of cinematic skill.

Will Jordan delivers a solid portrayal of Jason, a young man whose worsening headaches lead to a life-altering diagnosis. Mimi Millmore is excellent as Sophie, his loyal and loving partner, grounding the story with sensitivity and emotion. Together, they bring a genuine, intimate chemistry to the screen that makes the impact of Jason’s deterioration all the more affecting.

Cinematographer Joe O’Hagan lends the film a polished, widescreen aesthetic. The clean framing, well-judged colour grading, and overall visual quality highten the production to a professional standard. Every shot serves the narrative without distraction.

The film avoids melodrama, opting instead for a restrained and sincere approach. One particularly poignant moment – a doctor’s visit in which Jason confuses their anniversary – illustrates the subtle devastation of memory loss. Laura Dee brings a respectful authority to her role as Jason’s doctor, supporting the central performances without drawing focus.

McQuillan’s script is informative without being instructional. It sensitively outlines the symptoms and emotional toll of Alzheimer’s while remaining firmly character-driven. Jason’s line, “Everyone I love will be gone,” encapsulates the fear and disorientation that comes with the illness.

Ultimately, Memories of Us is a moving, endearing, and highly crafted short. It is as much a love story as it is a reflection on loss – and a strong example of how personal storytelling, when done with integrity, can educate and move. Highly recommended.
