Review

Written and directed by Nace DeSanders, ‘Infatuation’ is an artistic experimental short film that explores a mans adoration towards the female body. Rickard Claeson leads the cast as the man with Kia Rush and Alexis Brown as his subjects. The film explores themes of sexuality, body image, race and female empowerment. DeSanders has created a beautifully crafted short that offers both seductive and disturbing viewing.

The 4-minute film opens with the man (Rickard Cleason), dressed only in white underwear, surrounded by white disembodied manikins. His desire and curiosity is strong. The short continues when two black women enter the frame (Kia Rush and Alexis Brown). He is in control of their bodies; tying them up and painting them in white paint. The mysterious narrative concludes with the women in conversation with each other (albeit unheard and through subtitles); “You are beautiful”, “You too”. The closing shot shows them tied up at the back of the room with white bags over their heads.

Rickard Cleason delivers a remarkable performance as the man. His ability to showcase the disturbing characteristics, without dialogue, is praiseworthy. Cinematography, music and production design are of a high standard aiding the experimental narrative brilliantly. Nace DeSanders and her cast/crew have created an engaging short that delves deep into race and female empowerment. A finely crafted film that deserves attention.
