Langley McArol’s 20-minute drama, ‘Superhero’, opens with the quote; “Imagination elevates us from our pain” – which sets up this heart-wrenching story poignantly.
This short film follows a single mother and her young son Jeremy. Jeremy has his obstacles, succumbing to school bullying and battling acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Inspired by writer/director Langley McArol’s own childhood experience and his close maternal bond, the short film builds on the theme of courage – through the power of imagination from bedtime storytelling. Within this world we learn about his guardian, the Mighty Celestia, a protector and guide to the young boy.
Rayce Gibson delivers a truly admirable performance as Jeremy. His on-screen connection with Tammy Arnold, who plays his mother, is sincere and heartfelt which makes it easy to get sucked into the unfolding drama. The film takes a sombre turn as Jeremy is rushed to hospital. His organs have begun to fail from an infection and so the time has come for one final story to be told.
This may be a personal project for Langley, but his blood, sweat and tears have created a powerful piece of film. ‘Superhero’ is essentially a mother-son love story – that love is felt in abundance and unapologetic. A finely crafted short that pulls at the heart.
