3/5

Review

Written and directed by Bruce B. Gordon, ‘Whole ‘Nother Level’ is a dramatic short film that stars Brett Emanuel as Randy – a cerebral palsy sufferer who attempts to fights against the odds to break through physical inability and to live an independent life. Achara Kirk stars as Maureen – Randy’s occupational therapist. Despite Randy’s infatuation towards Maureen, she is mandated by law to do what’s best for him – moving to a full-time care facility. Alain Azoulay and Whitney Hall complete the on-screen cast as Randy’s ill-stricken parents. ‘Whole ‘Nother Level’ explores themes of hope, family and love. The short is a heartfelt soapy drama that delivers captivating and engaging scenes from start-to-finish.

The 19-minute film opens with Randy introducing us to his world (narration) – albeit in sarcasm. The audience will quickly warm to Emanuel’s beautiful portrayal – sprinkled with comedy. Randy’s goal is to pass a final dexterity test that will enable him a live a normal life. His neurological condition limits his movement – or as Randy would say; “I’m just a lame ass cripple”. Bruce B. Gordon has delivered an important film that doesn’t shy away from showcasing the disability in action. The entire short is set within one-location – flawless characterisation and dialogue help to maintain audience engagement.

Despite unnecessary incidental music throughout scenes, the title theme (produced and performed by Gordon) will catch your ear. Visually, cinematography is of an acceptable standard and aid the narrative. High praise to Brett Manuel for a stunning performance as Randy. The film concludes in high drama as the protagonist is forced to make progress. A highly recommended watch.
