Review

Emily Weider’s ‘Juicy’ is a quirky and audacious short comedy that tackles sexual curiosity and self-discovery with wit and charm. Written, c0-directed, and led by Weider herself, this short film showcases her multifaceted talent and offers an engaging, laugh-out-loud exploration of one woman’s hilarious journey to lose her virginity. The film is co-directed by Emily Everhard.

The story centers on Eleanor (played by Weider), an early-20s virgin, who begins her quest into the uncharted territory of her sexuality. The opening scene immediately hooks the audience with Eleanor awkwardly – and amusingly – watching porn. From the get-go, the film leans into its edgy humor and doesn’t hold back.

Confiding in her best friend Liz (Devin Kessler), Eleanor receives a crash course in intimacy, complete with hilariously inventive demonstrations involving fruit and vegetables. The sharp, adult-themed dialogue between Eleanor and Liz is perfectly executed, thanks to the film’s snappy writing and impeccable comedic timing. Kessler’s performance as the supportive yet sassy best friend is a delight, adding layers of humor and warmth to the narrative.

When Zach (Gage Polchlopek) enters the picture as Eleanor’s hookup, the comedy ramps up further. Eleanor’s determination to dive headfirst into her first sexual encounter is both bold and hilariously awkward. Weider nails the relatable nervousness, her expressive performance bringing authenticity to Eleanor’s journey. And just as the tension builds, a “juicy” climax flips expectations, delivering a payoff that’s as unexpected as it is laugh-worthy.

Visually, the film is polished and vibrant, with Zach Cooper’s cinematography complementing the eccentric tone. ‘Juicy’ packs a lot of personality, humor, and heart into its runtime. Emily Weider emerges as a filmmaker to take notice of, delivering a bold and entertaining short that’s as juicy as its title suggests. Highly recommended.
