Pops

A comedy that explores the role-reversal in a father/son relationship.
5/5

Review

Written and directed by Graham High, ‘Pops’ is a short dramedy that stars H Michael Croner as Danny – a father who has a close bond with his adolescent son. The film follows Danny’s visit to own his aging father and explores the role-reversal of father-son relationships in later life. Chase Fulp portrays the child-like version of Pops with Jim Cash as the real aging Pops. Graham High has created a comical short with outstanding performances all round. An insightful film that beautifully captures a broken family dynamic.
The 12-minute film opens with Danny (H Michael Croner) playing with his son. After he receives a call regarding his ill-father, we see Danny visit his own pops – but communication has been broken since the death of his mother. Pops is dismissive, ignorant and challenging – feeling much younger than he really is. His internal youth is showcased externally by a child actor (Chase Fulp) performing in the role. A grey wig, facial hair, clothes and a deep voice is used to create the comical portrayal. ‘Pops’ is a charming, witty short film that captivates the audience from start-to-finish. H Michael Croner (Danny) carries the film throughout and delivers a moving performance. Chase Fulp’s role is equally praiseworthy with sprinkles of comic-relief and drama.

Visually, the short is captured with stunning cinematography by Daniel Klockenkemper. The plot is a narrative success and intriguing characterisation will keep the audience engaged. The film concludes with a heart-felt ending as Jim Cash (the real aging Pops) makes a surprise appearance – waving off his son for potentially the last time. Graham High and his cast/crew have delivered a sweet film worth watching.
