Review

In ‘I regnen ser jeg dig’ (In the Rain I See You), director Emil G. Mogensen delves into the psychological undertow of heartbreak and obsession. With a story by Christoffer Fischer and Christoffer Jorge Thomsen, and top-tier production by Jacob Jørgensen and Mette Foldberg Friis, this short film pulls you into the murky waters of a mind held captive by love lost.

Malthe, played with haunting fragility by Oscar Alexander Sahl, is fresh off a breakup, his mind clouded with memories of Caroline, his ex-girlfriend. Attempting to pull him out of his emotional spiral, his best friend Sarah (Ida Lorentzen) whisks him away for a night of distractions. But her intentions soon seem murky – does she just want to help him move on, or is she nursing her own feelings for him? Sarah’s distress whenever Malthe brings up Caroline hints at her struggle, layering tension into each interaction.

Aleksander Priess-Christensen’s cinematography captures the story’s psychological intensity, balancing beautifully lit, high-quality shots with a dark, atmospheric edge that frames the story’s descent into emotional turmoil. The camera work – crisp yet moody – reflects Malthe’s unraveling state of mind.

As the night unravels, Malthe’s grip on reality grows tenuous. Caroline’s presence haunts him, her image mingling with the club’s shadows and Sarah’s worried gaze. Is this reunion real, or merely a figment of his longing? This ambiguity – this tug-of-war between memory and reality – propels the film into darker, sinister realms, right up until a twist ending that leaves you wondering what’s truly real and what heartbreak has merely conjured.

‘I regnen ser jeg dig’ is an intensely written drama that gives no easy answers. It’s a triumph of high production values and strong performances, with Sahl’s portrayal of Malthe’s vulnerability marking him as a talent praise. Highly recommended.
