Review

Pat Bradley’s ‘A Single Strand’ takes the timeless premise of classic short story ‘The Gift of the Magi’ and flips it on its head, delivering a short that’s both heartfelt and unexpectedly dark. On the surface, it’s about love and sacrifice, but Bradley doesn’t just stick to the sentimental route – we’re treated to a surprising twist that’ll leave you rethinking everything you thought you had figured out.

The story revolves around Michelle (Jordan Chin) and Phillip (Nathaniel Rosenthalis), a couple closing in on their five-year anniversary. Michelle’s initial suspicion of Phillip’s infidelity – after finding a mysterious red hair on their bed – teases the potential for a typical relationship drama. But just as quickly as that suspicion arises, it dissipates, making way for the real narrative: two people, broke but in love, trying to give each other something special.

Michelle tries secure a gift for Phillip, while Phillip, blissfully unaware, embarks on his own quest. Enter Agnes (Jill Maynard), a wild card who injects chaotic energy into the film, pushing the story in a completely unexpected direction.

And just when you think you’ve settled into the rhythm of this sweet, if quirky, love story, Bradley hits you with a twist that turns everything upside down. It’s abrupt, jarring even, but it works. The final moments leave you with a sinking feeling, but also a curiosity that might make you want to rewatch the ending for clues you missed.

‘A Single Strand’ balances light humor with dark undertones. Strong performances, particularly from Chin and Rosenthalis, combined with Bradley’s sharp writing and sleek production, make this short film both engaging and shocking.
