Review

‘The Hero vs. The Mic Man’ is an absurd comedy-action short, created by and starring Joshua Moran. With Moran playing both the overconfident hero and the bizarre villain, TV Head, the film embraces a deliberately low-budget aesthetic, adding to its silly, tongue-in-cheek quality.

From the opening, it’s clear this isn’t a story meant to be taken too seriously. The Hero, more interested in striking heroic poses than saving the day, patrols a city that exists within a cheap, green-screened video game backdrop. The laughably bad visual effects are not a mistake, but rather part of the film’s quirky charm. Moran seems to intentionally lean into the rough, DIY vibe, adding to the film’s satirical nature.

The plot itself is simple, yet packed with absurdity. The Hero stumbles upon the Mic Man, a laid-back in an abandoned building. Mistaking him for a villain, the Hero gets distracted by bodies hanging from the ceiling, but soon discovers the true threat is TV Head. The Hero’s attempts to save the day are hilariously clumsy.

The film doesn’t aim for thrilling action or visual perfection. Instead, it leans into its absurdity, with humor rooted in its deliberately rough execution. For those looking for something technically sharp, this might not hit the mark. However, ‘The Hero vs. The Mic Man’ is a low-budget, entertaining and self-aware parody, celebrating its own silliness with a satirical wink at traditional action tropes.
