The Other Side

An action-packed film with heart that deserves high praise.
4/5

Review

Directed by Akiko Izumitani, ‘The Other Side’ is an emotionally driven action/drama film that follows Keith (Tanner Thomason) – a detective whose cover is blown. The first half focuses on Keith’s pursuit to rescue his fiancé Judy (Peyton McDavitt) from an Asian gang. The second half centres around the kidnapper’s point of view. Izumitani has created a touching short with the goal to create empathy and showcase the untold story of a criminals own personal/home life.

James Kyson stars as Hank Lee (one of the kidnappers holding Judy hostage). Hank is persuaded not to kill Judy, despite orders from above to do so. He reflects on his home life, his partner and his unborn child. Keith murders Hank during an altercation to rescue his fiancé. As he lays dying a phone call is attempted from his partner – she is in labor.

Based on a story by Akiko Izumitani (Director) and written by Hunter Woo, the 15-minute short is a highly engaging watch. Despite 5 minutes of unnecessary and overwhelming high action with intense fight choreography and little dialogue – the film manages to grasp the heart of the viewer until the closing credits. Cinematography, lighting, sound, music and acting delivery are truly astonishing to say the least. An action-packed film with heart that deserves high praise.

Brief Synopsis

An undercover detective must infiltrate an Asian gang’s compound and rescue his kidnapped fiancé. However, the reality is much different than he expected.
