Review

Colombe Rubini’s ‘Sous les écailles’ (‘Under the Fish Scales’) is a French-language Swiss drama that dives into the mundane yet emotionally turbulent life of Max, portrayed with subtle brilliance by Guillaume Chauvin. Max’s world revolves around his father’s fishmongery business, a life seemingly set in stone until the arrival of Zoé, a trainee played by Philippine Delaire. Initially resistant to help her, Max finds his life unraveling and reassembling in unexpected ways as his feelings for Zoé deepen.

The film’s strength lies in its ability to capture the raw, unvarnished essence of its characters’ lives. Rubini’s direction is masterful, creating an intimate, almost voyeuristic experience for the audience. The limited dialogue enhances this sense of realism, making every word and glance between characters laden with meaning. Chauvin’s performance is particularly noteworthy; his restrained yet powerful portrayal of Max conveys a depth of emotion that resonates deeply.

The cinematography by Augustin Losserand is exceptional. The high production values evident in the quality of the visuals. The film’s aesthetic is both gritty and beautiful, reflecting the harsh realities of Max’s world while also capturing moments of poignant beauty.

‘Sous les écailles’ is effectively a coming-of-age story; it’s a deeply affecting exploration of identity and change. Zoé’s departure for a better job leaves Max at a crossroads, forcing him to confront the life he’s always known and the possibilities beyond. The film’s fly-on-the-wall style adds to its authenticity, making the audience feel like silent witnesses to Max’s journey.

‘Sous les écailles’ is a beautifully made and emotionally resonant film. Rubini’s storytelling is both delicate and powerful, making this a must-watch for anyone who appreciates nuanced, high-quality drama.
