Directed by Karin Abdellatif, ‘Panic’ is an insightful experimental docu-drama that explores a young man’s challenge with anxiety and panic disorder. Starring Karim Sami as Sami, the short film is based on the actor’s real-life journey from his darkest episodes to recovery.

The 9-minute film opens with the protagonist normal morning routine. His outlook is positive and Sami is excited to attend a 90’s themed party. As the celebrations commence, a dark cloud overcomes his physical and mental state – a sudden panic attack cripples him. The short doesn’t shy away from showcasing harrowing scenes of mental distress, showcased by multiples shot of physical agitation, heavy breathing and sleep deprivation. His thoughts and fears are also expressed through dialogue.

Abdellatif’s film does a praiseworthy job in highlighting key symptoms without over dramatization. This outstanding docu-drama rewards viewers with a deeper understanding of mental illness and the positive road to well-being. Karim Sami’s portrayal is thoroughly captivating and highly engaging from start to finish. Empathy and empowerment are equally felt. Cinematography, sound, lighting and music wrap up the narrative beautifully – delivering a high quality professional short film. The film concludes with Sami’s path to well-being, with the character focusing on creative hobbies, yoga and gardening. ‘Panic’ is a far-reaching film that will resonate, inspire and encourage many viewers. Highly recommended.
