La Antiromantica

A mesmerizing experimental dance film.
3/5

Review

Written, directed and starring Jamie Sarai Margolin, ‘La Antiromantica’ is an experimental short film that explores romanticism, sexuality and loneliness. This LGBTQ+ film co-stars Isabella Fallahi as the love interest. Music and dance play a pivotal role in the construction of the film – Kelsey Lu’s ‘’I’m Not in Love’’ provides the soundtrack to the narrative.

The 3-minute short, which is partially filmed in black-and-white, follows a lonely lesbian woman and her interactions with another girl. No dialogue is used. Dance, fuelled by sexuality, forms the majority of the short – which intercuts with black-and-white footage of their first meeting and moments of isolation from our protagonist.

Jamie Sarai Margolin (Writer/Director/Star) brings a spark of fresh energy and vibrance to her work, with stylish cinematography, choreography and costume design aiding the experimental beauty perfectly. Isabella Fallahi’s role as the love interest is equally captivating and their performance partnership is mesmerising. The theme of mental health is subtly explored within the short as we witness moments of the protagonist’s loneliness and depression throughout the dance routine and preceding black-and-white imagery. ‘La Antiromantica’ is an unconventional short film with an experimental narrative that works well with its dreamy soundtrack. Highly recommended.
