Review

2/5
A mystery set inside an 18th century manor house.
Written and directed by Steven Lancefield, ‘Museum Piece’ is a short mystery film set inside Preston Manor, an 18th century English stately home known for its paranormal activity. The narrative follows Jerome (Henry Collins), who is confronted by his illicit past from an ominous tour guide (Lena Richardson). The film delves into themes of guilt, regret, anxiety and female empowerment. A low-budget production that is unfortunately saturated with narrative and technical flaws.

Lena Richardson’s eerie portrayal is by far the only credible aspect of the entire film, a stellar performance that is undervalued by the weak plot and amateur craftsmanship. Without spoiling the narrative, Lancefield falls short with the characterization of Jerome – an implausible backstory that will leave viewers perplexed and unrewarded. Henry Collins delivers an ailing performance that is akin to a novice – unduly theatrical from start-to-finish.

Museam Piece
Technically, the cinematography and sound are of a substandard quality – which alludes to a first-time/student production. The musical soundtrack is overstated and unnecessary. Post-production is of a reasonable standard, but combined with the beforementioned mishaps it fails to deliver a professional output. Viewers are likely to lose engagement pretty quickly – and if not, they are staying for Lena Richardson. A stale mystery that malfunctions too soon.
