The Cottage

An unsellable country house, a desperate estate agent, and a man living in a garden shed – what could go wrong?

Review

Ossie Mcintyre’s ‘The Cottage’ is a polished addition to the crowded field of horror shorts. The film follows Monta (Monta Radvilavica) an estate agent who has to sell a remote cottage steeped in ominous reputation. Her boss, played by Mike Kelson, makes it clear this is her last chance to prove herself. The setup, while straightforward, is effective enough to carry the tension for the film’s runtime.

The film’s strength lies in its atmosphere. The cinematography captures the bleak countryside with a clinical eye – beautiful yet empty, and just the right side of unsettling. It’s a restrained approach that shows some respect for the audience’s patience.

Monta Radvilavica delivers a respectable performance, her desperation and simmering fear never tipping into melodrama. Adam Kaige, as Neil, the peculiar neighbour living in a shed, walks a fine line between oddball and threatening. His delivery is unnerving, and the film does eventually pull back the curtain on his true nature in a finale that offers a chilling payoff.

Production-wise, ‘The Cottage’ benefits from high-quality craftsmanship throughout. Lighting is used effectively to cast shadows and create tension without resorting to clichés. Sound design and editing complement Mcintyre’s cinematography , employing silence and carefully placed ambient sounds to heighten unease. The subtle layering of natural noises keeps the viewer immersed in the film’s uneasy atmosphere.

Ossie Mcintyre’s writing/direction in ‘The Cottage’ showcase a clear knack of how to build suspense through control. The script is lean, avoiding unnecessary exposition, and instead lets the tension grow through carefully crafted dialogue and character interactions. Mcintyre’s direction complements this with a measured pace that balances unease and moments of revelation, resulting in a film that feels focused.

It may not offer a wholly original narrative – but ‘The Cottage’ stands confidently among many.
